Dual fuel systems
Heat pump heating and cooling for most of the year, with a gas furnace that takes over when it gets cold.

Is dual fuel right for your home?
- You heat with a gas furnace and have ductsDual fuel keeps the gas line and the ductwork you already have.
- Your furnace is near the end of its lifeReplacing it is the natural point to add a heat pump alongside the new one.
- You want cooling as wellThe heat pump cools in summer, so there is no separate air conditioner.
- You want to keep gas for the coldest daysThe furnace carries the house when it gets cold, and the heat pump does the rest of the year.
How a dual fuel system works
Dual fuel pairs a regular heat pump with a high-efficiency gas furnace, sharing the same ducts. The heat pump heats and cools for most of the year. When the outdoor temperature drops to about 5°C, the furnace takes over: FortisBC's changeover rule for the Lower Mainland is 5°C or lower.
We pair a regular heat pump, never a cold-climate one. A cold-climate model's advantage is holding full capacity in deep cold, and in a dual fuel system the furnace is already doing the heating by then.
Your options
Three pairings, all working the same way: a regular heat pump for most of the year, a high-efficiency gas furnace for the cold.
Premium
York
Heat pump and furnace from one manufacturer, with a higher-end two-stage furnace (one that runs at a lower, quieter output most of the time). The pick if a quiet furnace matters to you.
Standard
Guardian furnace paired with a Midea heat pump
The middle option: the value tier's heat pump, paired with a different furnace.
Value
Midea
Heat pump and furnace from one manufacturer, at the lowest cost of the three.

- Dual Fuel System$17,600
Standard electrical connection included. Electrical service upgrades (if required for your home) are quoted separately. Your final price is confirmed in writing before any work starts. All starting-at prices are plus GST.

We take a 50% deposit to book your install. On CleanBC rebate jobs and strata jobs, we start with a $1,000 deposit, then collect the rest of the 50% deposit once everything is approved. Your deposit is fully refundable until one week before your install date, as long as no work has been done.
Rebates you may qualify for
Dual fuel doesn't qualify for CleanBC. FortisBC's dual fuel rebate is the program that applies.
What every dual fuel install includes
- The heat pump, the furnace and installation labour
- Sizing from a heat load report, on every dual fuel job
- Permits and inspections, pulled on every job
- A licensed electrician, brought in and scheduled by us where the job needs one
- Standard electrical connection
- Help with the paperwork for whichever rebates you qualify for
- A strata approval package for your council, if you live in a townhouse
- A post-install checkup: a phone check-in for most installs, a return visit for larger or more complex systems
- A 3-year labour warranty as standard
- Electrical service upgrades, if your home needs one, are quoted separately.
- We arrange the heat load report with an independent energy advisor, and it shows as its own line on your invoice.
How we size a dual fuel system
Every dual fuel system is sized from a heat load report, done by an independent third-party energy advisor. FortisBC requires a program-approved heat load calculation for its rebate, so this step isn't optional. What a heat load report covers.
We arrange the report, and it shows as its own line on your invoice. We use it to size the heat pump and the furnace together.

Heat load report
An independent energy advisor does the heat load report that FortisBC requires. We arrange it, and it shows as its own line on your invoice.
Your quote and scheduling
You get your price in writing. Standard jobs are 50% to schedule, with the balance due once the install is complete.
Install
We replace the furnace, install the heat pump, pull the permits and bring in the electrician where needed.
Rebate and post-install checkup
For the FortisBC rebate, you pay the full cost upfront and apply once installation is complete. We assist you with the paperwork. We also follow up after the install: a phone check-in for most homes, a return visit for larger or more complex systems.
Up to 12 years of labour coverage
3 years standard, with optional coverage up to 12 years.
It transfers when you sell
Labour warranties transfer to the new owner if you sell your home. The coverage adds value to the property rather than being lost.
Annual maintenance by Jolly Heating & Cooling is required to keep any labour warranty valid, whatever its term.
Questions we get asked
Does my furnace qualify for the FortisBC rebate?
It may, if your gas furnace is at least 15 years old and the new system is installed on or after October 15, 2026. The full conditions are in the rebate section above.
Rebate amounts are subject to eligibility and program funding. We'll confirm what you qualify for during your free estimate.
Dual fuel or a heat pump on its own?
Dual fuel keeps a gas furnace for the cold days. A heat pump on its own takes you off gas heat, and a cold-climate model can carry the house through a cold snap without leaning on an electric strip heater.
The rebate programs differ too: switching from gas to a heat pump alone falls under CleanBC, and dual fuel falls under FortisBC.
Rebate amounts are subject to eligibility and program funding. We'll confirm what you qualify for during your free estimate.
Does a dual fuel system cool?
Yes. The heat pump cools the house in summer through the same ducts.
Will I need an electrical panel upgrade?
The gas furnace is the backup heat, so the system doesn't rely on an electric strip heater in cold weather. That keeps the electrical load lower than an all-electric heat pump that does. We still check your panel at the estimate, and any upgrade is quoted separately.
What upkeep does a dual fuel system need?
An annual tune-up covering both the heat pump and the furnace. That yearly servicing by Jolly is also what keeps your labour warranty valid.
