Central heat pumps
One system that keeps your home warm in winter and cool in summer, running through the ducts you already have.

Is a central heat pump right for your home?
- You have ductsA central heat pump uses your existing ductwork to reach every room.
- Your furnace is due for replacementReplacing it anyway is the natural time to switch.
- You want cooling as wellThe same system cools in summer. There is no separate air conditioner to buy.
- You want to move off gasA heat pump runs on electricity, so the gas furnace can go.
- Your air conditioner is old tooOne heat pump replaces both the furnace and the air conditioner.
No ducts in your home? Ductless mini splits do the same job room by room.
How a central heat pump works
A heat pump moves heat instead of burning fuel to make it. In winter it pulls heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside; in summer it runs the other way and takes heat out. An indoor air handler (the fan unit that pushes air through your ducts) sends that air to every room, the same way your furnace does now.
There are two kinds. A regular heat pump runs at about 70% of its capacity at -15°C and leans on a strip heater, an electric element that costs about three times as much to run, to make up the rest. A cold-climate heat pump holds full capacity at -15°C. Hitachi calls its cold-climate technology HeatForce, and you may also see HyperHeat: they mean the same thing.
The National Building Code (2020) puts Metro Vancouver's winter design temperature, the cold a heating system here is sized for, at about -7°C. Which kind suits your home depends on how much you want to rely on the strip heater in a cold snap, and we'll go through it with you at the estimate.

Heating & cooling
- Central Heat Pump$14,150
Standard electrical connection included. Electrical service upgrades (if required for your home) are quoted separately. Your final price is confirmed in writing before any work starts. All starting-at prices are plus GST.
Payment plans are available through FinanceIt, with the options covered during your free quote.
We take a 50% deposit to book your install. On CleanBC rebate jobs and strata jobs, we start with a $1,000 deposit, then collect the rest of the 50% deposit once everything is approved. Your deposit is fully refundable until one week before your install date, as long as no work has been done.
Rebates you may qualify for
Which program applies depends on what heats your home now. CleanBC is for switching from gas heat to a heat pump. BC Hydro's rebate is only for homes heated with electricity today, and it never applies when a heat pump replaces gas heat.
What every heat pump install includes
- The equipment and installation labour
- Sizing for your house, with a heat load report when you are switching from another system type
- Permits and inspections, pulled on every job
- A licensed electrician, brought in and scheduled by us where the job needs one
- Standard electrical connection
- Help with the paperwork for whichever rebates you qualify for
- A strata approval package for your council, if you live in a townhouse or condo
- A post-install checkup: a phone check-in for most installs, a return visit for larger or more complex systems
- A 3-year labour warranty as standard
- Electrical service upgrades, if your home needs one, are quoted separately.
- We arrange the heat load report with an independent energy advisor, and it shows as its own line on your invoice.
- If the air handler has to move out of the attic, building the closet, drywall and painting are not included.
How we size a central heat pump
One central heat pump serves the whole house through the ducts, so it is sized from a block load: the heat the whole house loses at the winter design temperature, calculated as one number.
When you are switching system types, such as a gas furnace to a heat pump, that number comes from a heat load report done by an independent third-party energy advisor. We arrange the report, and it shows as its own line on your invoice. What a heat load report covers.
Replacing a heat pump with a heat pump, we size from how your current system performs, plus experience, and that is right almost every time. If the job is close to the edge, or you want certainty, we may suggest a report anyway.
From booking to post-install checkup
Free in-home estimate
Your home comfort advisor looks at your ducts, your panel and where the outdoor unit can go. In a townhouse or condo, they also photograph each equipment location for the strata package.
Heat load report and panel check
If you are switching from another system type, an energy advisor does the heat load report. You send us your BC Hydro usage data and our licensed electrical contractor checks your panel.
Your quote and scheduling
You get your price in writing. Standard jobs are 50% to schedule. Strata and CleanBC jobs start with a refundable $1,000 deposit. Once the application or approval is through, we collect the rest of the 50% deposit and book your install.
Install
A heat pump install usually takes two days. We pull the permits and bring in the electrician where needed. The balance is due once the install is complete.
Post-install checkup
We follow up after the install: a phone check-in for most homes, a return visit for larger or more complex systems.
Up to 12 years of labour coverage
3 years standard, with optional coverage up to 12 years.
It transfers when you sell
Labour warranties transfer to the new owner if you sell your home. The coverage adds value to the property rather than being lost.
Annual maintenance by Jolly Heating & Cooling is required to keep any labour warranty valid, whatever its term.

Questions we get asked
Can I keep gas heat as a backup?
Yes. That is a dual fuel system: a regular heat pump paired with a high-efficiency gas furnace, which takes over when it gets cold. The heat pump still does all of the cooling.
My furnace is in the attic. Where does the new air handler go?
Current BC code no longer allows the air handler in the attic, so we relocate it to a closet on the second floor. Whether the old unit comes out of the attic is your call.
Building the closet, drywall and painting are not part of our install.
I am replacing a gas furnace. Does the BC Hydro rebate apply?
No. BC Hydro's rebate is only for homes heated with electricity now. Switching from gas to a heat pump is what CleanBC covers.
Rebate amounts are subject to eligibility and program funding. We'll confirm what you qualify for during your free estimate.
How long does the install take?
Usually two days. We confirm the schedule with your quote.
What upkeep does a heat pump need?
An annual tune-up. If we installed it, that yearly servicing by Jolly is also what keeps your labour warranty valid. We service heat pumps we did not install, too.
