Heating and cooling for Coquitlam homes
Coquitlam has its own zoning rules for heat pumps and furnace vents, and its higher hillside homes sit in a colder building code climate zone.
Where Coquitlam lets the equipment go
Since January 2019, Coquitlam’s zoning bylaw has its own rules for outdoor heating and cooling equipment. The City’s placement guide says that at a one-family home, a heat pump or air conditioner sits at least 1.0 metre in from the required interior side setback for your zone, and it prefers the centre of the rear yard or the front yard, close to the house.
The rules cover furnace and boiler vents too. Exhaust from central heating equipment has to go toward the front yard, rear yard, exterior side yard or through the roof, never into the side yard next to a neighbour. When we replace a furnace in Coquitlam, the vent route is part of the plan, not an afterthought.
Hillside homes and the colder climate zone
The BC Building Code groups places into climate zones by how much heating they need over a year. Coquitlam’s building code guide puts land above 250 metres in zone 5 rather than zone 4, a step colder than the rest of the city.
If your home is up the hill, we size to that. And if you’re going all-electric, it’s a reason to look closely at a cold-climate heat pump, which holds its full output at -15°C where a regular one drops to about 70%.
