Yes. Our winter design temperature, the coldest temperature a system is sized for, is about -7°C, so a heat pump runs efficiently almost all year here. For homes going fully electric, a cold-climate heat pump (Hitachi calls it HeatForce; HyperHeat means the same thing) holds its full capacity at -15°C, where a regular heat pump delivers about 70%. If you'd rather have gas backup for the coldest days, a dual fuel system pairs a regular heat pump with a furnace.
A furnace burns natural gas to make heat, and only heats. A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, pulling warmth from the outside air even in winter, and it cools in summer too. Because it moves heat instead of burning fuel, it uses far less energy for the same warmth.
A regular heat pump paired with a high-efficiency gas furnace. The heat pump does the work in mild weather, which is most of the year in Metro Vancouver, and the furnace takes over at about 5°C and below. You get cooling in summer and gas heat in a cold snap. Dual fuel uses a regular heat pump rather than a cold-climate one, since the furnace covers the cold end.
A heat pump is cheaper to run in mild weather, which covers most of the heating season here. In a cold snap, gas is the cheaper heat, which is why a dual fuel system hands over to the furnace at about 5°C. Both cost far less to run than electric baseboards.

Baseboard homes are usually good candidates for ductless, since there's no ductwork to work with. A multi-zone system gives you independent control room by room, plus cooling in summer, which baseboards can't do. Replacing electric heating with a heat pump also opens up the BC Hydro rebate, which is available at any income level. We'll confirm what your home qualifies for at your free estimate.
Sometimes, but less often than people expect. Once your estimate is booked, we do a free panel check using your actual BC Hydro usage data, which is more accurate than a calculation from the panel alone, and it can show that no upgrade is needed. Our licensed electrical contractor runs the load calculation, and we bring them in if any electrical work is needed.
It depends on your home: square footage, insulation, windows, ceiling height, layout and how many levels you have. When you're switching system types, for example a furnace to a heat pump, we have a heat load report done by an independent energy advisor to make sure the new system is the right size. We arrange the report, and it shows as its own line on your invoice. Going like-for-like, such as furnace to furnace, we size from how your current system performs, plus experience. Dual fuel always needs a heat load report, because FortisBC requires a program-approved heat load calculation.
It depends on how well it has been maintained and how hard it has worked. As a furnace ages, breakdowns get more frequent, and repair costs start competing with the cost of replacing it. If yours is getting on, an estimate tells you where it stands.
